Gallery 60 NYC is pleased to present Eight Times Rising, a new solo exhibition by Japanese artist Yuko Sekiguchi. Building on her 2024 solo show Fortunes in Color: The Art of Everyday Joy, Sekiguchi continues to explore the symbolic resonance of good-luck figures while expanding her visual storytelling into new forms.

This year, the artist places a special emphasis on the Daruma—a traditional symbol of persistence and renewal, often associated with the proverb “fall down seven times, get up eight.” Her new works reinterpret the Daruma’s spirit through large-scale crayon paintings that unfold like picture scrolls and transform into a contemporary kamishibai (paper theater). By merging image, text, and performance, Sekiguchi creates a collaborative dialogue between drawing and narrative, bringing centuries-old traditions into a vibrant modern context.
